Bowfire in concert Feb. 20 at Pasquerilla center

JOHNSTOWN — Fiddles on fire.

World-class violin virtuosos will perform when Bowfire returns to the stage at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 20 at Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center in Richland Township.

The fast-paced show will feature violin playing, step dancing, tap dancing and singing, often all at once.

Bowfire uses strings, piano, bass, percussion, guitar and cello to deliver a dazzling performance.

Added to that is dramatic lighting, set design and costumes.

This will be the third time the energetic group has performed at Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center.

“They were here in 2004 and 2007,” said Michael Bodolosky, arts center executive director.

“Ticket sales are steady. Don’t miss this show.

“It’s PBS broadcast entertainment with extraordinary musicianship and is an extremely valuable entertainment experience.”

Bowfire’s show will take the audience on a musical journey that moves seamlessly through jazz, classical, bluegrass, Celtic, rock, hip-hop, gypsy, world music, Texas swing and Ottawa Valley and Cape Breton fiddling styles.

The group was formed in June 2000 by artistic director Lenny Solomon, a classically trained jazz violinist.

After meeting many different types of string players while on tour, he thought it would be great to get them together to showcase a broad range of music.

Bowfire made its debut performance at Expo 2000 in Hanover, Germany.

Audience response was wildly enthusiastic as people latched onto the novelty of a company that energetically merged different styles of music and then added choreography, special lighting and sound design.

The ensemble made its American debut in a series of performances during 2001 in New York City and embarked on its first U.S. tour during the 2002-03 season.

In December 2003, Bowfire made its Asian inaugural with performances in Taiwan.

The group was invited to perform on the Governor-General’s Awards telecast, the Canadian equivalent of the Kennedy Center Honors.
