Events | Love story

“Aida: The Timeless Love Story” will be presented through Aug. 10 at Cresson Lake Playhouse, 279 Shapiro Road, Loretto.

Showtimes will be 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sunday and Aug. 4.

Tickets are $17 for adults and $10 for students younger than 18.

Saturday in the park

Whiskey River Panhandlers will perform for the 2013 Concerts in the Park series from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday in Central Park, downtown Johnstown.

Founded in 2009, the Americana group includes Chris Verbano on vocals, mandolin and guitar; Mike Giuffre on vocals, guitar and guitjo, a combination of guitar and banjo; and Justin Giuffre on upright bass.

The band’s music blends Americana, folk, alternative country, Appalachian, bluegrass and rock ’n’ roll.

Wandering music

Bronx Wanderers will bring doo-wop and rock ’n’ roll of the ’50s and ’60s to the area at 7:30 tonight at Arcadia Theater, 1418 Graham Ave., Windber.

Tickets are $30, $32 and $35.

Jazz fixture

Cajun Norm and the Jam Session Band will perform at Jazz Along the River at 6 tonight at St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church pavilion, Fifth Avenue and Power Street in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.

Ethnic foods will be available for purchase beginning at 5.

Chairs will be set up, and those who attend also are invited to bring their own chairs.

Homecoming party

Ebensburg Homecoming will be held Saturday at various sites throughout Ebensburg and Lake Rowena.

Festivities will kick off from 7 to 11 tonight with the Downtown Shutdown, a street party with bands Evil Ways and Juke Left.

Saturday will bring a yard sale, farmers’ market, book sale, wrestling, 5K race and children’s activities.

A free concert from 8 to 11 p.m., featuring classic rock band Totem at Lake Rowena, will conclude festivities.

Family fights

“Squabbles” will be presented through Aug. 4 at Mountain Playhouse, 7690 Somerset Pike, Jennerstown.

Showtimes will be 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, 2 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays and 3 p.m. Sundays.

Tickets are $14 to $21.25 for preview night, $22 to $34 for evenings and $17 to $30 for matinees, which includes a $2 service charge.

Beautiful bluegrass

The 10th annual Coleman Station Bluegrass Festival will be held from 4 to 10 p.m. today and noon to 10 p.m. Saturday at 1144 Coleman Station Road, Friedens.

Today’s lineup will feature Darin and Brooke Aldridge, The Stevens Family, Idletymes, Blue Shades and host band Mountain Therapy.

Saturday’s lineup will feature Nothin’ Fancy, The Stevens Family, Northwest Territory, Allegheny Drifters, Blues Shades, The Custer Family & Friends and Mountain Therapy.

Tickets are $15 for today, $20 for Saturday and $35 for the weekend, including rough camping.

Children ages 12 and younger will be admitted free.

Bandshell blast

AmeriServ Free Summer Concerts at Roxbury Bandshell will continue Sunday at the bandshell at Roxbury Park along Franklin Street, Johnstown.

Rosie and the Jammers will be featured beginning at 5 p.m.

Firemen’s fun

The 92nd annual convention of the Volunteer Firemen’s Association of Cambria County & Vicinity will be held Saturday through Aug. 3 at Adams Township Volunteer Fire Company No. 2, St. Michael.

Saturday’s events will include a classic car cruise-in at 2 p.m., battle of the barrel contest at 3 and queen contest at 7.

There will be a bowling competition at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Richland Lanes and a golf tournament at 8 a.m. Monday at Ebensburg Country Club.

A firefighters proficiency contest will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, with a pumping contest at 6 p.m. Thursday and bucket brigade competition at 6 p.m. Aug. 2.

Admission is free.

Dinner music

The series of Songworks Acoustic Dinners will continue from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Grand Halle, 306 Broad St. in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.

 An ethnic dinner will be served at 6:30, and Songworks member Ann Dougherty will perform and host an open mic at 7:30.

Tickets, which will be available at the door, are $10.

Family festival

The 56th annual Homecoming Festival of St. Benedict Roman Catholic Church, Carrolltown, will be held today through Sunday at the church grounds at 100 Main St., Carrolltown.

A garage sale, bingo and basket auction are planned, and there will be a disc jockey and children’s games.

A wing night will be held tonight, and a chicken dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

Country concerts

The 39th annual Country Music Show, sponsored by Indiana County Fraternal Order of Police Rhododendron Lodge 33, will be held at 1 and 6 p.m. Sunday at Indiana County Fairgrounds, Mack Park.

The concert will feature country superstar Joe Diffie and country bands Little Texas and North of Mason-Dixon.

Tickets are $22.50 in advance and $25 at the gate.

Drawing the line

“Drawing: Structure and Surface,” a workshop with Kathleen Kase Burk, will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Bottle Works Ethnic Arts Center, 411 Third Ave. in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.

This workshop requires basic skills and prior experience with drawing.

Students will need a pad of white drawing paper at least 11-by-14 inches, a variety of drawing pencils and a kneaded or gum eraser.  

There will a brief tour of Burk’s exhibition and a discussion of the ideas of structure and surface as they relate to drawing.

The cost is $50, and a bagged lunch is needed.

Sports clinic

Johnstown Lacrosse will offer a clinic from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Aug. 7 and 14 at the Richland High School football field, Richland Township.

The introductory sessions for athletes 10-17 years old are  sponsored by East Hills Recreation Commission and will be supervised and instructed by experienced lacrosse players who have played at the collegiate level.  

Minimum equipment required includes a hockey helmet and gloves and a lacrosse stick.  

East Hills Recreation has a limited number of sticks, which can be borrowed.

There is the possibility of assembling travel teams to play in a short, spring season against other teams from western Pennsylvania and developing clinics for younger age groups.

The cost is $25.

Nature days

Junior Ranger Nature Discovery Days will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the picnic area at Johnstown Flood National Memorial.

The free event is designed for children ages 7-10.

Participants will learn about the natural surroundings enjoyed by members of the South Fork Fishing & Hunting Club more than 100 years ago.

Reservations are required, and a parent or guardian must accompany each child.

There will be a limit of 12 children, and lunch will not be provided.

Performance venue

Art and music will merge on the menu at the Venue of Merging Arts, 305 Chestnut St. in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.

StudioPM guided art event featuring acrylic painting will be held from 7 to 10:30 tonight.

Admission is $35 for ages 21 and older only and includes instruction and materials.

Scott Jeffreys will lead the Blues Gathering from 8 to 11  Saturday.

Tickets are $7 at the door or $5 VIP.

A teen open mic night will be held from 7:30 to 9:30 Tuesday.

Dog-gone reads

“Tales with Tails,” a special literacy initiative that encourages children of all ages and abilities to read stories to AKC Canine Good Citizen dogs, will be held between 4 and 5 p.m. Monday in the children’s department at Cambria County Library, 248 Main St., downtown Johns-town.

There will be 15-minute time slots to read to a dog.

Registration is required and may be done in person or by phone.

Outdoor music

The 35th free summer Concerts on the Green will feature the Civic Concert Band from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday on the grounds of Community Arts Center of Cambria County, 1217 Menoher Blvd., Westmont.
