Postseason for the arts

Showcase of the Stars at arts center featurs music, songs, dances

— The Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center will present a mix of music, song and dance during the initial Showcase of the Stars, which will feature excerpts from the area’s best high school musicals.

Students from Bishop McCort, Berlin Brothersvalley, Cambria Heights,  Conemaugh Township Area, Conemaugh Valley, Hollidaysburg, North Star, Penn Cambria, Richland and Westmont Hilltop will reprise their roles at 7 p.m. Sunday  at the arts center, 450 Schoolhouse Road in Richland Township.

Performances will include selections from “42nd Street,” “Grease,” “The Secret Garden,” “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Wiz,” “The Music Man,” “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” “Oliver” and “Anything Goes.”

“We have 10 schools participating in this first year of doing this, and in the future I hope we can accommodate more,” said Michael Bodolosky, arts center executive director.

“This gives students a chance to showcase their talents and share those talents with communities that are not their own.”

Serving as emcee for the evening will be WJAC-TV personality Marty Radovanic.

Schools’ musical selections and participating directors include:

Bishop McCort will present selections from “42nd Street” such as, “We’re In The Money,” “Getting Out Of Town,” and “42nd Street.”

Conemaugh Valley will present “Is This My Home,” “Be Our Guest,” “Mob Song” and “Change In Me” from the musical “Beauty & The Beast.”

“To allow the students to have a ‘final curtain call’ of sorts for their show gives the kids some much needed excitement,” said Brian Empfield, drama adviser and director at Conemaugh Valley.

“Sports, forensics and other school activities have postseasons, why can’t the arts?”

Empfield said he is excited to see the selections from the other schools.

“My schedule prevented me from seeing any shows this year, and I have heard so many great things,” he said.

Penn Cambria’s songs from “How to Succeed at Business Without Really Trying” will be “Secretary is Not a Toy,” “Coffee Break” and “Brotherhood of Man.”

Conemaugh Township Area will present “Thoroughly Modern Millie” with “Gimme Gimme,” “I Turned the Corner,” “Muqin” and “Forget About the Boy.”

Richland will present a medley of songs from its production of “Oliver!”

Berlin Brothersvalley will present “Grease.” Musical selections will feature “Summer Nights,” “Greased Lightning,” “Freddy My Love” and “We Go Together.”
