Bishop soon will have new address

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The leader of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown is changing his address.

Bishop Mark Bartchak, who assumed leadership of the diocese in 2011, plans to take up residence at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament’s rectory in downtown Altoona.

In announcing the move Thursday, the diocese secretary of communications, Tony DeGol, said the residence that has housed the diocese’s bishop for many years will be sold.

Proceeds from the sale, which was approved by the Diocesan Finance Council and College of Consultors, will be used for pastoral needs in the diocese.

Some of the money also will be used for victims in sexual misconduct cases, DeGol said.

Bartchak’s decision to sell the residence and move to the cathedral rectory has been under consideration for some time, DeGol said.

Bartchak has resided with other priests in all of his other assignments.

The move should be completed by the end of summer, DeGol said.
