$50M suit against Somerset County Jail dismissed

Inmate claims he was bitten by a spider, not properly treated

SOMERSET — It doesn’t matter whether a former Somerset County Jail inmate had a boil or a spider bite, his injuries – and allegations that he wasn’t given proper medical treatment – aren’t worth $50 million.

A 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel has refused to reverse a federal judge’s decision to dismiss Ronald Sever’s lawsuit against the Somerset County Jail, the Daily American reports.

The 50-year-old claimed he suffered fever and terrible pain from a spider bite while an inmate in April 2010, before he was transferred to a Virginia lockup on charges in that state.

U.S. Magistrate Keith Pesto recommended the case be thrown out last year, noting Sever was properly treated for a boil while in jail – but that even if it was a spider bite, it resolved quickly with minimal care.
