Man says he killed girlfriend in self-defense – by stabbing her more than 40 times

ALLENTOWN — An eastern Pennsylvania man on trial in the stabbing death of his girlfriend a year and a half ago says she attacked him and he stabbed her only to get away.

The (Easton) Express-Times reports that 33-year-old Jonathan Schaffer of Allentown took the stand in his own defense Thursday in Lehigh County Court.

Schaffer said 31-year-old Lauren Wolstenholme attacked him with the knife in their Allentown apartment in September 2012 and they struggled in the living room.

He said he loved Wolstenholme, the mother of his child, and stabbed her only so she would get off him. Under cross-examination, he acknowledged stabbing her more than 40 times.

Schaffer’s mother testified earlier that her son called and said he’d killed Wolstenholme, but she heard the victim calling for help.
