Hospital accepting applications for mentoring program

JOHNSTOWN — College students preparing for medical school have an opportunity to spend 10 weeks next summer shadowing physicians at Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown.

The hospital is accepting applications for its Mentoring in Medicine program, which provides exposure to many of Memorial’s departments including radiology, obstetrics, orthopedics and emergency/trauma.

Students also have the opportunity to select a department of their choice to shadow for two weeks. Pathology, oncology and neurosurgery are some choices.

“The goal of the program is to allow young people who are strongly considering medicine to confirm that they do indeed want to go into medicine and to begin to sort out what specialties they might be interested in,” said Dr. Richard Schroeder, an orthopedics surgeon who co-founded the program with his wife, Diana Schroeder. She continues to serve as program coordinator.

This is the mentoring program’s 11th year. More than 100 students have participated, and about 75 percent have gone on to medical school.

Junior and senior college students can get more information by emailing dschroe@cone Applications are due Feb. 15.
