Storm knocks out power throughout region

JOHNSTOWN — An intense, fast-moving thunderstorm downed power lines and caused outages throughout both Cambria and Somerset counties this evening.

The storm caused outages in Johnstown, its suburbs and as far away as Ebensburg, Colver and Berlin, Penelec reported.

Penelec Spokeswoman Beverly Green said more than 2,000 customers in the Johnstown area alone temporarily lost power as the storm moved through the area.

She said crews were sent to Cambria and Somerset counties to work on switches shortly after 4 p.m.

Power lines were reported downed on Bedford Street, a Cambria 911 supervisor said.

First Energy, Penelec’s parent company’s website, reported that more than 500 customers lost power in the Ebensburg and Cambria Township area, including parts of Route 22.

Somerset 911 officials said a tree was brought down during the storm in Ursina Borough.

Two accidents were reported - both of them minor, 911 officials said.

A one-vehicle accident was reported near the Widman Street exit but no injuries were reported, Cambria 911 officials said.

A one vehicle crash was also reported in Shade Township with no apparent injuries, a Somerset 911 supervisor said.
