United to offer Erie-to-Chicago flights by June 5

ERIE — United Airlines is replacing round-trip service between Erie International Airport and Cleveland with flights to and from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.

The Erie Times-News reports the Cleveland service is ending June 4 because that city will no longer be a United hub. But the June 5 flights to and from Chicago will start the next day – and offer cheaper, faster service.

Currently, Erie travelers have to go through Cleveland to get to Chicago. The flights will now be direct and cost about half as much.

The change is considered a good thing for Erie since Chicago offers more international flights than Cleveland. Also, GE Transportation, a major Erie employer, moved its global headquarters from the Erie suburbs to Chicago two years ago.

Erie also has direct flights to Philadelphia and Detroit.
