Dad suspected of DUI after daughter is killed on first date

PITTSBURGH — A Pittsburgh man was in custody on suspicion of driving drunk after his vehicle rolled over and dragged his 12-year-old daughter after her first date.

Police have yet to release the name of the father of the victim, who was identified by the Allegheny County medical examiner as Shamera Harris.

Police say Harris’ mother and brother were also in the vehicle when her father stopped to drop off the girl’s date after a movie.

Police say Harris’ father told them he though the sport-utility vehicle was in park, but it apparently wasn’t as it rolled over the girl who had gotten out of the vehicle to take some pictures about 8 p.m. Sunday.

Authorities say the SUV dragged the girl about 50 feet before striking a tree. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
