Garage collapses in Oakland following Weds. night accident

— No one was hurt when a garage collapsed Thursday afternoon in the Oakland section of Stonycreek Township.

The building housing Affordable Auto Sales at 1749 Bedford St. came down around 12:30 p.m.

None was inside at the time of the collapse and no injuries were reported, said Jeffrey Lees, battalion chief for the Oakland Volunteer Fire Company.

“When the fire department was called there wasn’t a whole lot we could do,” Lees said. “We made a perimeter around the building to keep people away.”

A car slammed into the building 12 hours earlier, Lees said.

A man and a woman were driving down Bedford Street around midnight.

“The vehicle apparently lost its brakes, went through the parking lot of Carmen’s Wholesale (Tires), crossed Penrod Street and struck the building,” he said. “Throughout the day, the structure became weak and the main beams of the garage collapsed.”
