Richland wrestler reaches PIAA title match

HERSHEY — Nico Pecora gave the area its second state finalist at the PIAA Class AA Wrestling Championships tonight.

Pecora rallied from a third-period deficit for an 8-6, overtime victory over Montoursville’s Garrett Hoffman in the semifinal round at the Giant Center. The Richland senior will face Kane’s Evan Delong with the 170-pound title at stake in the championships on Saturday afternoon.

It was Pecora’s second overtime victory of the day. He beat Bethlehm Catholic’s Nick Cortopassi 7-5 in overtime earlier in the day.

The Southwest Regional third-place finisher, Pecora has already beaten the Southeast and Northeast champions. Now he’ll face the Northwest champ in Delong, who is 35-0.

Bedford 113-pounder Jon Gabriel is the other local wrestler who will wrestle for gold on Saturday afternoon.

The Tribune-Democrat and tribdem.com will have more coverage from the PIAA tournament.
